RECENTLY:

The Department of Art was honored to have a special visit to our building by internationally renowned artist Andrew Romanoff on Friday, April 18th. Andrew was in Missoula to speak about his Shrinky Dink art at the Museum and then took time to review the works of Mary Ann Bonjorni’s Drawing II class who also made Shrinky Dink images thanks to the generous donation of materials from the awesome folks who run the company. Professor James Bailey was a visiting artist for five days this month at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. While on campus he presented six lectures including: “History of Monotypes: Past to Present”, “The History of Artist Books“, “Steamroller Printmaking”, “Books in the Digital Age” and a public lecture on his own work. In addition, Professor Bailey presented two demonstrations on monotyping, and worked with the graduate seminar class. And he did some gator wrestling:

Dr. Suzanne Gott, Assistant Professor of Art History at the Department of Visual and Aboriginal Arts of Brandon University, Manitoba will present a lecture titled, “Of Hummers, Lufthansa, and Osama bin Laden: Display, Performance, and Global Culture at Asante Funerals” on Tuesday, April 29 at 7 PM in Fine Arts 302. Dr. Gott’s research focuses on women’s art and visual culture in southern Ghana. She holds Art History and Folklore doctoral degrees in African art from Indiana University, Bloomington. She has written on maternal imagery in Asante court and funerary regalia, on women’s dress and the fashionable display of female wealth, and on strategies of display and performance in Asante women’s funerary presentations. She is co-editor of a forthcoming book on contemporary African fashion, guest curator of The Newark Museum exhibition Glass Beads of Ghana, and consulting African art curator for The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

This year’s MFA Thesis Exhibition featuring Kathy Rodriguez and Hak Kyun Kim will open in the Gallery of Visual Arts on Thursday, April 10 with a reception from 5-7pm. The pieces will remain on display until May 9th, check it out!

The MA Thesis Presentations are scheduled as follows:

Carlie Magill will discuss “Gifford Pinchot’s Photographic Aesthetic” at 4.15pm April 10 in Social Sciences room 356.

Shandy Lemperlé will present “Representing French Royal Mistresses: Agnés Sorel to Madame de Pompadour” on April 17 at 5.15pm in SS 356.

Kathy Rodriguez will discuss “Henry Meloy: The Portraits A Narrative Exhibition” on April 21 at 5.15pm in SS 356.

A reception will follow each presentation in the Gallery of Visual Arts.

VISITING ARTIST:

Photographer Ray Meeks will present a lecture of his work this evening, April 9 in Anderson Hall 316 at 6.00pm

ANNOUNCMENT:

The Department of Art is pleased to announce the formation of its newest ASUM sanctioned student group, The Multiple Edition Society. Dedicated to the propagation of all things related to Printmaking, this group is open to any interested student and will hold its first informational meeting on Monday, April 14 at 1.00pm in Fine Arts 304.

The Department of Art was honored to have internationally acclaimed printmaker Tom Huck on campus last week. Tom gave a wonderful lecture and slide show about his work and with the assistance of Professor Jim Bailey, worked with students to create a limited edition run of prints. ART EVENTS:

For First Friday, April 4th there are at least two student exhibitions to mention. First, the newly formed Student Sculpture Association will present an installation in the alley behind Sushi Hana on Pine st. begining at 5pm. More info to follow.

CALL TO ARTISTS:

Blue Mountain Clinic and Students for Choice are looking for art submissions for their upcoming Bra and Condom fashion show titled, “Off the Rack: A Daring and Baring Fashion Show” to be held May 2nd at the Wilma theater. The event supports “healthy sexuality that goes beyond barriers, gender and stigma.” Submissions are due April 14th. Contact Blue Mountain Clinic for more details.

ART DEPARTMENT FACULTY AS ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS:

As if hosting a visiting artist, orgainizing a lecture and staying up for 35 hours to assist students in creating prints weren’t enough, Professor Jim Bailey was one of six artists from around to country invited to exhibit in “Book Marks 2008″ at the Birke Art Gallery, Marshall University in Huntington, WV.

In addition, his work was included in the exhibition “Face to Face” at the Jundt Art Museum in Spokane, WA along side such artists as Ivan Albright, Jose Posada, Rembrandt and Diego Rivera.

Professor Bailey will also be a visiting artist in April at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA.

HAVE A GREAT SPRING BREAK!

The BFA 2008 Senior Thesis Exhibition continues in the Gallery of Visual Arts and the UC Gallery until April 2 and March 21, respectively. Here are some pics (that do no justice to the actual works) I took of the wonderful pieces on display:

MORE ART:

Freshman Art Major SHANE BELL invites everyone to an art exhibition and silent auction on Saturday, March 15 at Bear’s Brew Coffee House on Helen Ave (which, as evidenced by these pics I found online, is clearly a lively place) beginning at 6pm. Shane and his fellow artists are trying to raise money to build an orphanage in Zambia, Africa. Stop by and check out this event and see some art, eat some food and contribute to this worthy cause. There is no admission fee to the event.

Visiting Adjunct Instructor Koi Neng Liew is offering a Figurative Ceramics Workshop on Thursday, March 13 in the Ceramics Studio (Art Annex) with a demonstration from 10am -1pm and slides to begin at 2pm. This event is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Rudy and Lela Autio Opportunity Fund in Ceramics.

Renowned Printmaker Tom Huck will be visiting campus on March 18th and giving a lecture at 4.15pm in Social Sciences 356. This event is also free and open to the public, sponsored by the Jim and Jane Dew Visiting Artist Lecture Series.

ART OPPORTUNITIES:

Also, The University of Montana’s Sustainable Campus Committee is currently organizing events for Earth Week. They would like an artistic design-a logo, a picture, etc.-that they can use on event posters and promotion materials (computer design, painting, drawing, etc). The winning entry will receive a $100 gift certificate to the UM Bookstore. The artwork will also be displayed on posters and materials that will be distributed all over campus and throughout the community. The deadline is April 1, 2008. All entries should go to Jessie Davie, ASUM, UC Suite 105.

ART DEPARTMENT FACULTY AS ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS:

Mary Ann Papanek-Miller, Professor and Chair of the Department of Art has her artworks included in the following exhibitions:

BFA, BFA, BFA!

The Department of Art is proud to exhibit the wonderful works of our Senior Thesis BFA students in two galleries on campus. The UC Gallery will display works from March 3-28, and the Gallery of Visual Arts will have pieces up from March 6-April 2. Both exhibits will host opening receptions on March 6. The UC Gallery reception will be from 4-6pm, with the GVA reception beginning at 5 and ending at 7pm. Click on the orange square to view the students’ own website designed for the exhibition.

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design will be sending an accreditation review team to the Department of Art on March 10 and 11. The members of this team will be interested in meeting with students to get their input on our program and facilities. Department of Art Graduate Student Kathy Rodriguez will be offering a sneak peek of her upcoming MFA Thesis Exhibit at The Catalyst.  “Preview the Extravaganza” will open on First Friday, March 7th from 5pm-7pm.  Join Kathy and see what lies in store for her April 10th thesis exhibit.

The Missoula Art Museum will host a First Friday Member’s Reception with a Curator’s Gallery Talk by Peter Held who will discuss David Shaner at 7.00pm. Be sure to check out all the work currently on display at the museum by clicking HERE.

Undergraduate Scholarship Applications are available and due to the Art Department by February 22nd. There is a good amount of money sitting in a huge pile available to students. Contact or visit the Art Department’s main office to get an application and get more information on eligibility. CURRENT EXHIBITIONS:

The Department of Art’s Gallery of Visual Arts (in the Social Science Building) is currently exhibiting the works of Michael Barnes and Tom Huck. Michael paid a visit to campus and spoke about his work on Feb. 12th, and Tom Huck will deliver a lecture in March.

The University Center Gallery is exhibiting the works of recent Department of Art graduate Travis Smith until February 29th. Titled, “Messes, Makers, Meaning and History,” Travis’ work ,”presents pictorial translations of colonization. He uses a crude, unrefined painted surfaces to compose subtle and at times, bitter narratives of events that deal with the colonization of Native Americans.” Be sure to check it out.

The Montana Museum of Art and Culture is currently exhibiting the works of “52 works by contemporary Native American artists addressing the conflict between Native people’s relationship to the earth and the political and economic forces that undermine it. This traveling exhibition was organized by Honor the Earth, a national Native American organization founded by Winona LaDuke.” Click HERE to visit their page and get more details.

CALLS FOR ART:

Art Student Matt Fennell is conducting an art contest and looking for submissions. Matt described the project as, “[The} Student Political Action Committee on ASUM has decided to enact a war on apathy, themed “Get out the Vote” drive for the 08 Presidential election…and needs badass flyers. So we’re running a contest to see if students will respond. We want 3 different war themed designs, with the slogan “war on apathy” for fliers. We will also eventually make flags for a publicity stunt if students are interested in that. The winning artists will get featured on ASUM’s website.” If you are interested, send Matt Fennell an e-mail by clicking on his name. Matt says they will need submissions in the next few weeks, so act now!

The Department of Media Arts is looking for an artist to help design and produce a small back drop, sculpture and set for a stop motion animation piece. You can contact Paul Alvarez by clicking on his name and sending an e-mail, or you can give him a call at 406.544.3068.

ART DEPARTMENT FACULTY AS ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS:

The Department of Art’s faculty members have been very active in the creation, exhibition and research/publication of art and related issues lately; here is a summary of their recent achievements:

Associate Professor Elizabeth Dove had a Solo Exhibition at the Missoula Art Museum from November 2, 2007 to January 5, 2008 titled “birthweight.” Elizabeth was the Juror for National Exhibition “Americas 2008 Paperworks“. The jurying was in November 2007 for the show in January 2008 at Northwest Art Center, Minot, North Dakota.

Professor Elizabeth Lo’s work “Tea and Rice” was featured on a full page ad in Ceramics Monthly’s October issue for “Form and Imagination, Women Ceramic Sculptors,” at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA. Professor Lo also had works on exhibit in a curated group invitational at the Turman Larison Contemporary Gallery in Helena, MT called “Northwest Figurative Ceramics Invitational”. ichard Notkin curated the exhibition.

Professor James Bailey is currently part of an exhibition titled, “Book Marks 2008″ at the Birke Art Gallery at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. The exhibit runs until March.

Assistant Professor Brad Allen recently conducted an iron pour, allowing students and open to faculty, to take part in the process of creating artworks from liquid iron using molds they created for a 45-student collaborative exhibition in the Off-Center Gallery. Assistant Professor Allen recently accepted an invitation to serve as a founding committee member of the Western Cast Iron Art Alliance and the WCIAA Conference in Denver at the University of Colorado, congratulations, Brad!

Professor Rafael Chacón gave a lecture titled “A.J. Gibson Stories” for Leadership Missoula, reviewed portfolios in progress for the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, co-taught a new course titled “Egyptian Art and Culture” with Margaret Kingsland as part of Continuing Education’s MOLLI program, and lectured on the exhibition “Crash, Pause, Rewind” at the Missoula Art Museum. Rafael was Interviewed in Kelly Black and Russell Daniels’, “Missoula’s Festival of the Dead,” for New West Missoula. His guest column titled “Blending the past, present: Building additions walk a fine line between preservation, new ideas” was published in The Missoulian.

Professor and Department Chair M.A. Papanek-Miller had two works in “Trans” at Atlantic Works Gallery (a national juried exhibition), East Boston, MA, through January 12, 2008. The Juror was L. Bradbury, Independent Curator and Gallery Director and Curator Montserrat College of Art, Beverly M.A. Mary Ann also has works in the Todd Gallery at Middle Tennessee State University until Feb 22nd.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Nathan Sullivan has works currently on display in a solo exhibition at Southern Oregon University’s Stevenson Union Gallery titled, “Form Series.” Check out Nathan’s work on his website by clicking HERE.

The past few weeks have been very busy for the Department of Art, as you can see:

The Gallery of Visual Arts hosted the exhibit and lecture of JAROD CHARZEWSKI. JAROD spoke on October 4th, but his works will remain on display until November 9th.

The department was fortunate to have a visit by world renowned industrial hygienist MONONA ROSSOL, who stopped by to visit the art facilities and make suggestions regarding health and safety. MONONA also gave a workshop to students, faculty and staff. Here are a couple of pics of MONONA doing her thing:

The annual Day of the Dead parade included prints made by art students at The University of Montana, as well as area elementary and high schools. The prints will be on display at the Badlander until the end on November. Thanks to everyone who participated:

Art Student and lead singer of the band Black Velvet Elvis’s Olivia Britz is pictured above as she performs on the Day of the Dead at the Badlander, which is also exhibiting the Day of the Dead Steamroller prints for the month of November.

Current Exhibitions

Department of Art Professor ELIZABETH DOVE is currently showing her works at the Missoula Art Museum in an exhibition titled, “birthweight.” ELIZABETH’S works will be on display until January 5th, with an artist lecture at 7pm on November 15th.

The work of ORVILLE CHIGBROW, titled, “My View” is currently on display at The Catalyst this month. ORVILLE graduated with an MFA in Ceramics from The University of Montana in 2006. His works will be exhibited through November.

JOLENA RYAN and MALENA ROSEN both received their BFAs from The University of Montana in 2007, now they are displaying their works at The Darkroom. Check out their photographs and mixed media until November 30th.

The University Center Gallery will continue to display the works of BRIAN DeLEVIE until November 9th. Brian’s exhibit is titled, “Re-Remembered” and is a photo/mixed media display.

Linda McCray graduated from The University of Montana in 2007 with an MFA in Painting, and has “Recent Spiritual Paintings” on exhibit until December 31st at the D. Carlson Woodworker Window in Helena, MT.

Student Juried Exhibition:

Department of Art Faculty as Artists and Scholars:

Professor BETH LO’S “Tea and Rice” was featured on a full page ad in Ceramics Monthly’s October issue “Form and Imagination, Women Ceramic Sculptors,” at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA. The exhibition will run from Sept 8 through November 24th.

Community Art Involvement:

The Americorps VISTA program at the Missoula Art Museum is looking for volunteers to assist with art classes through the Flagship Program. And are always in need of volunteers in general. Exhibitions:

Currently on exhibit in the GVA is “Tides:Everglade” A Multi Media Installation by Jarod Charzewski. Jarod will give a lecture (sponsored by the Jim and Jane Dew Visiting Artist Lecture Fund) on Thursday, October 4th at 4.15pm in Social Science room 356. There will be an opening reception on Friday, October 5th in the GVA from 5-7pm.

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture is hosting two exhibitions, both on display until October 20th. “Traces: Montana’s Frontier Re-visited,” new photographs by Richard S. Buswell is in the Meloy Gallery, and “Mike Catlin, Butte: The 1970s” is in the Paxson Gallery.

Currently on exhibit in the UC Gallery is an installation by Susan Murrell called, “Contrive + Classify.” The exhibition will run until October 12th, with an opening reception on Thursday, October 4th from 5-7pm.

Art major Kayla Rombeger has a display in the Davidson Honors College titled, “Marked Pages/Works on Paper” through October.

Forward Montana is exhibiting the works of Art major Jess Abell for First Friday. There will be an opening reception on Friday, October 5th from 5-8pm at Forward Montana’s office at 736 S. Higgins.

Art major Pam Caughey had one of her mixed media pieces, “Riptide” accepted into the Montana Watercolor Society’s Twenty-Fifth Annual National Juried Exhibition. The exhibition will run until October 27th at the Bigfork Art and Cultural Center. Pam also had a piece titled, “Shattered Scape” selected by the Montana Museum of Art & Culture Siting Committee for the Skaggs Building Addition on the UM campus, it will be installed this month.

The Clay Studio of Missoula is hosting the opening reception, “The People, a Figurative Ceramic Invitational” on Friday, October 5th from 5.30-9.00pm. The exhibit runs until October 29th.

Call to Artists:

The UC Gallery is seeking applications for their upcoming exhibition schedule. Applications are available at the UC Gallery and outside the Department of Art offices. The deadline for submission is Friday, November 2.

Hospice of Missoula is asking for art students to assist in their annual fund raiser ball. The theme this year is “A Whole New World.” Contact Gina Hegg at ginahegg@msn.com for more information, or give her a call at 880.8289 or 549.0400.

Grace Pointe Church is looking for artists to display works in the congregation’s temporary space located in the lobby of the Missoula Children’s Theater. The Department of Art is happy to welcome new and returning students for the 2007/2008 academic year.

There are several art exhibitions of which students should be aware:

Department of Art Professor and Chair, Mary Ann Papanek-Miller’s works, “Advice from a Caterpillar” are on display at Northern Galleries at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, until October 12. You can check out Mary Ann’s work on her website as well.

Professor Beth Lo is exhibiting works at Art City in Hamilton, Montana. The works are part of an exhibition titled, “Mothers and Daughters” which runs until October 14.

Professor Cathryn Mallory has been accepted into the “Montana Abstract Invitational” at the Turman Larison Contemporary gallery in Helena, Montana. The exhibit runs until September 1.

Professor Mallory is also exhibiting with Professor Bobby Tilton at the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art in Great Falls, Montana until December 31.

Professor of Sculpture Brad Allen is part of an exhibition titled, “Sculpture Invasion” at the Koehnline Museum of Art at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Ceramics Grad Student, Kensuke Yamada, has works included in the current exhibition at the Catherine Person Gallery in Seattle, Washington.

Currently on display at the UC Gallery are works from local artist Matthew Kirscht. Matt’s exhibit is titled, “The Clown Machine and Other Deceits,” and runs until September 14th with an opening reception from 5-7pm on September 6.

Professor Rafael Chacón has an essay titled, “Palimpsest” published in Closed and Open as part of the Newberry Library. Rafael described his essay as a discussion on Postmodernism and the state of Library Sciences in Contemporary Art.

Faculty Exhibition:

The Annual Faculty Exhibition will take place in the Gallery of Visual Arts from September 4 to the 28th.  Join the faculty at the opening reception from 5-7 on September 6th.  All faculty will display their works, and Dr. Rafael Chacón will give a lecture from 4.10 to 5.00 in Social Sciences 356.  Dr. Hedquist will give her lecture on September 27th from 4.10 to 5.00pm in SS 356 as well.  Be sure to turn up and see what our artist and scholars have been working on.

As we prepare for another exciting academic year, here are some items you may have missed over the summer:

First, the Department of Art, The University of Montana, and the art community as a whole mourned the passing of Professor Emeritus Rudy Autio. Click HERE to read about Rudy’s life and works. A memorial service will be held in Rudy’s honor: Join family and friends at the Montana Theater on July 21st at 4.00pm in the PAR-TV Building and Bonner Park for a reception to follow. Professor of Art History and Criticism, Dr. Rafael Chacón wrote an article about Rudy in a recent issue of the Missoula Independent. Click HERE to read it. There is a memorial display of Rudy’s life and work on display in the Department of Art History and Criticism Resource Center in FA 201.

Department of Art instructors Steve Krutek and Edgar Smith are currently exhibiting their works at the Gold Dust Gallery in Missoula. Check out their show, “Is This The Woods?” as this is the last scheduled art exhibit at the Gold Dust!

Department of Art instructor Orville Chigbrow is currently exhibiting works at the Emerson Gallery in Bozeman. Oriville’s “Speaking Softly” will be on display until August 31st.

Orville was also accepted into Kent State University School of Art’s 7th Annual National Juried Cup Show. Orville’s “Two Large Cups” were amongst the winning entries; congratulations Orville!

Orville was also accepted at the Merging Potters Exhibition at Vessels Gallery , Boston for his work titled, “Equilibrium.” Orville is clearly a very busy man.

Dr. Rafael Chacón received the “Dorothy Ogg Award for Individual Contributions to Historic Preservation” from the Missoula Historic Preservation Committee on May 11th, congrats to Dr. Chacón.

Dr. Chacón’s review “Structural Anatomy: An Architectural Look at the UM School of Journalism’s New Don Anderson Hall” was published in the May 20th edition of The Missoulian.

Exhibitions:

The Department of Art, in conjunction with the Montana Museum of Art & Culture, are proud to present a retrospective exhibition of the career of retiring Professor of Art, Marilyn Bruya. The exhibition opens Thursday, April 26 from 4-7pm and is open to students and the public. Join faculty and staff as the Department of Art honors Marilyn’s nearly 30 years of service at The University of Montana.

Department of Art Graduate Student Theodore Hughes will be discussing his research on Wars of the Romano, a Flemish tapestry, circa 1575, as well as other topics for his MA in Art History Thesis presentation. Join Theodore in SS 356 at 4.15pm and then at the reception in the GVA from 5-7pm.

The Department of Art is proud to present the MFA exhibitions of graduating students Linda McCray, Leah Katz, Amanda Turpen and Kendall Mingey in the GVA.  The opening reception will be Thursday, April 26 from 5-7pm and the exhibition will run until May 11.  Be sure to check out the fine works that represent these student’s Fine Arts studies.

Department of Art Professors Bobby Tilton and Cathryn Mallory will be exhibiting works in the “Caravan Collection” at the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture’s Jessie Wilber Gallery in Bozeman, Montana from May 1 to June 27. There will be a closing reception on Wednesday, June 27 from 6-8pm with a gallery talk at 6.30.

Department of Art Graduate Student Eva Champagne will be exhibiting works in “Introspective” from May 4 to May 28 at the Clay Studio of Missoula. The opening reception will be from 6-9pm on May 4th.

Department of Art graduate Orville Chigbrow has had works accepted in the juried exhibition, “Equilibrium” at the Emerging Potters Exhibition at Vessels Gallery in Boston. The show runs from May 18 to June 30.

Department of Art Professor and Chair Mary Ann Papanek-Miller has works currently on display at The University of Colorado, Boulder in an invitational juried exhibition called, “Visual Noise.”

Professor Beth Lo announced that her works are on display in Santa Fe, NM, in a group invitational exhibition called, “In my own Words.”

Visiting Artists:

As part of the Department of Art’s Visiting Artist program, Ayumi Horie will be providing a workshop in ceramics Tuesday, April 24 from 2-4.30pm in the ceramics studio.   At 7.30 the same evening she will present a slide lecture of her work, everyone is invited to attend.

Art Department Professor Dr. Rafael Chacón recently taught a class on local architect A.J. Gibson in conjunction with the Lifelong Learning Institute. An April 23 article in the Ravalli Republic discussed Dr. Chacón’s course.

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture presents: George Longfish: A Retrospective, March 9 - April 20, 2007 in the Meloy and Paxson Galleries. This retrospective exhibition features George Longfish’s work of the past 35 years. Longfish (Seneca/Tuscarora) is an internationally noted artist. He was director for the Graduate Program in American Indian Art at UM in 1972, and was Professor of Historical and Contemporary Native American Art at the University of California at Davis 1973-2003. Director of the C.N. Gorman Museum at UC Davis 1974-1996, Longfish has been highly influential is his roles as educator, curator, and artist. He is well-known for his mixed media paintings that stress the importance of owning one’s cultural information and passing it to future generations. His works often use humor and irony to address issues of decolonization and Native identity. After its debut in Missoula, this exhibition, organized by MMAC, will travel throughout the country. Visiting Artist:

Ceramicist Patrick Coughlin will be on campus April 2nd and 3rd! On Tuesday from 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm, he will offer a demonstration of silkcreening on ceramic surfaces in the ceramics studio, and will give a slide lecture at 7.30 that evening. Be sure to attend his demos and lecture!

Art Department Faculty as Artists and Scholars:

Professor Elizabeth Dove is currently exhibiting works at the Ucross Foundation titled, “Range of Expression” and was chosen to participate in the National Print Exhibition at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Gallery of Art’s juried exhibition. Elizabeth was a panelist at the Southern Graphics Conference in Kansas City, MO discussing “…the intersection of traditional printmaking and digital technology.”

Instructor Orville Chigbrow has a Raku bowl on display at the Gloria Kennedy Gallery in New York as a part of the juried exhibition, “Applied Art vs Fine Art.” Here is a pic of the work:

EXHIBITIONS:

The Department of Art’s BFA SENIOR EXHIBITION I will open Thursday, March 8th. Join the artists Dan Callahan, Lacey Gibbons, John Charles Koelling, Matthew Hayes Lindsay, Jonathan Stanish, Brett Svetlik, and Matthew Wicks in the GVA for the reception from 5-7pm. The exhibit will run until March 22.

The second half of the exhibit, featuring Ian Clark, Margie Hunt and Joseph Knoepfler will be in the UC Gallery with reception from 4-6pm, running until March 22 as well.

Department of Art Graduate Student Kendall Mingey will present her MFA Thesis Exhibit in the Masquer Theater (PAR-TV Building) from March 13-16. The theater will be open from 2.30-6.00pm daily.

Linda McCray, a painting and drawing graduate student, has a painting entitled “Rising” included in the national juried show “Exploring Spirituality” at the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

UM Department of Art graduates are displaying their works at the The Gold Dust Gallery . ‘The Withdrawing Room’ from printmakers Caleb Sheridan, Craig Weinke, and Christine Cleveland: themes such as repetition, ritual, and ceremony, the three artists have created a show exploring ideas of humanity in nature and social interaction with mass media. OPPORTUNITIES:

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture is accepting applications for artworks to be installed in the new Don Anderson Hall building on campus. The committee overseeing the selection process has several submission requirements, and inquiries may be made to Manuela Well-Off-Man.

Local business owner Chris Henry is looking for art to be displayed in his space. Chris is open to ideas, but is most interested in large objects such as metal or wood sculptures, or ceramics. The business hopes to participate in First Friday exhibitions, but may be willing to retain works for semi-permanent display. Students in the Department of Pharmacy are conducting a contest to find a design for their T-shirts. The shirts will be worn by participants in the “gA.S.P.ing for AIR,” 2007 5K run that will raise money to send children to asthma camp. Beth Lo, Professor of Ceramics, is currently displaying works called “Contemporary Ceramics,” at the Dairy Barn Art Center in Athens, Ohio as well as “Le Mesa” at NCECA in Louisville, KY and “Earthtones” at Actor’s Theater of Louisville.

Dr. Rafael Chacón, Professor of Art History, moderated a Donors’ Forum for the Museum of Art and Culture on February 1, 2007 in conjunction with the exhibition The Collectors’ Art.

The Gold Dust Gallery invites you to experience our latest exhibition ‘The Withdrawing Room’ from three printmakers Caleb Sheridan, Craig Weinke, and Christine Cleveland. Complimenting each other with themes such as repetition, ritual, and ceremony, the three artists have created a show exploring ideas of humanity in nature and social interaction with mass media. The opening reception will include live music, refreshments, and engaging conversation with some of Missoula’s up and coming artists.

Little is known about Caleb Sheridan; he is a man of mystery. What is known about Sheridan is that he engages in the fine arts through various media ranging from print, to installation, to performance. A BFA graduate in 2006, Sheridan finds a heavy influence in mass media, and every day iconic imagery, Sheridan uses familiar faces and symbols from our past, and gives them a twist that may seem a little off. Sheridan’s work, though rich with strong, contrasting, colors, contains many dark ironies. Due to his private nature, his work is not often shown in the traditional gallery settings, but when it is presented, it brings great excitement and intrigue to its viewers.

Caleb’s work constantly evaluates various methods to categorize the rapid digestion of mass media, iconic imagery and seemingly useless facts that invade us at such an overwhelming pace.
In his current work, “Rate of Frequency (Taste the Rainbow),” he searches for pattern and rhythm
