The 15th Annual Juried Student Exhibition opened last night to a large crowd of students, faculty, administrators and the public.  Take a look at these pics from the event, and of the student work.  Visit the exhibition in the Gallery of Visual Arts (Social Sciences Building) until November 20th. Special thanks to our juror Bob Durden and congratulations to the winners of the Annual Prizes!

In addition, School of Art Graduate Student Pam Caughey hosted a reception of her latest exhibition, titled “Half-Life”, in the UC Gallery.  Pam’s work will be on display until November 24th.

School of Art Painting I students from the classes of Professors Kevin Bell and Karina Hean will feature work  in the Off-Center Gallery on November 11 until Monday, Nov 23.   The closing reception with food and fun will be on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 5-7 pm.
The Off-Center Gallery is located in the Art Annex between the Ceramics and Sculpture studios.  This event is free and open the the public.

Visiting Artists:

Kurt Weiser, noted ceramist and professor of art at Arizona State University, will present a lecture at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 in the Ceramics Studio of the Art Annex. Weiser’s widely experimental approach to ceramics over the course of his career has resulted in groundbreaking developments in the vessel tradition, culminating in his signature China-painted porcelain forms.

Weiser served as resident director of the Archie Bray Foundation from 1977-88.  His work has been acquired by many institutions around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American Art, the National Museum of History in Taiwan, the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art and Institute of Ceramics, Shigaraki, Japan, the Los Angeles County Art Museum,  Carnegie Mellon University and others.  Weiser was honored as a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2003.

Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs
August 7 – October 23, 2009

This traveling exhibition organized is the largest display of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs ever shown in the United States. The show will feature 143 award-winning images from 1942 (when the Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism was established) through the 2009 awards. Visitors to this exhibition will see one of the most extensive and dramatic traveling displays ever mounted at the museum. Photographic images will be arranged chronologically. Each photograph will be accompanied by a firsthand account of the events leading up to the photograph. Among the historical moments captured are the raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima, the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby, and many others. These epic moments were captured by photojournalists doing their daily job. Many modestly claim they were simply at the right place at the right time. Yet they had the skill and the daring to seize the opportunity when it presented itself.

Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs was developed by the Newseum, the interactive museum of news in association with Business of Entertainment, Inc. NYC, Cyma Rubin, Curator.

Recent School of Art graduate Maggie Connors (BFA 2009) will be hosting an opening reception of her latest works at Noteworthy Paper & Press.  Join Maggie from 5-8pm at 101 S. Higgins.  Maggie’s work includes photography, printmaking, and other paper arts.

Just next door to Noteworthy is an awesome toy store called Tsunami.  Several art students including, Matt Fennell (That’s President Fennell to you), Jack Arcand, Tyler Krasowski, Adam Lynn and Lindsey Weber will be displaying their recent works in a group exhibition.

On campus, The Montana Museum of Art and Culture will be hosting the reception for “Hooked on Walter Hook“  from 5-7pm in the lobby of the PAR-TV building.  Walter Hook served as professor and chair of the Department of Art. His surrealist style is employed in colorful paintings of both abstract and everyday objects.

The Missoula Art Museum is proud to unveil artist Kerri Rosenstein’s first major solo museum exhibition. Rosenstein’s work employs both traditional media and natural matter.  Visitors are integrated in the work as they are invited to take one rose-stone and help redistribute the piece back into the environment. Join us for an exciting First Friday with a gallery talk at 7pm by Kerri.  As always, admission is free.  For more information, call 406.728.0447.

Congratulations to the Artists’ Collective for hosting a very successful Beaux Art Ball at the Elks Club!  Here are some pictures from the event:

Professor Jim Bailey’s Advanced Research Class in Printmaking traveled to Gonzaga University to see work being done by visiting artists “Drive By Press”,  students reviewed 100’s of contemporary prints, saw demonstrations and listened to several lectures.  Students also visited the Jundt Art Museum Print Archives, where they viewed original prints by such artists as Chuck Close, Pablo Picasso, along with prints by Glen Alps, Albrect Durer, Kathe Kollwitz and numerous others.  Here are pics from the trip:

Visiting Artist:

The Ceramics division of the School of Art presents a slide lecture by visiting artist Stephen Braun of Whitefish, Montana.  Braun has exhibited his work internationally and is known for his large scale raku fired figurative sculptures.  He is represented by the John Natsoulas Gallery of Sacramento, CA  His slide show will be at 6:15 pm on Wednesday April 29 in the Ceramics Studio.  The lecture is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Jim and Jane Dew Visiting Artist fund and SSCS.  For more information call 243-5893.

As the semester winds to a close, the School of Art’s student group, The Artists’ Collective, would like to invite you to their Beaux Art Ball.  Join UM students at The Elks Club (112 North Pattee St) for a night of fun from 8pm to 2am and enjoy the music of Victory Smokes and Long Story Short.

Big Changes!

As you may know, there have been a few changes made to the structure of things around here lately.  The School of Fine Arts will henceforth be known as The College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Department of Art is now the School of Art!  This change of terms brings the University of Montana’s areas in line with national professional standards in the field and will help to ensure quality education in the arts for many years.  Be on the lookout for new website designs, logos and other promotions of this historic and exciting transition.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts is seeking a new Dean as well.  All students are encouraged to attend the presentations and Q&A sessions held to introduce the two remaining candidates for this position.  Dr. Rollin Potter of the University of Central Arkansas will answer questions on Thursday, April 9th from 4.30 to 5.30 in Music Building room 204.  On Monday, April 13th, Dr. Stephen Kalm, former Chair of The University of Montana’s Department of Music will answer student questions from 4pm to 5pm in Music Building room 204.  Pizza will be served at both events.  Click HERE for a full schedule of the candidates’ visits.

GET BUSY, MAKE ART!

The Department of Art’s 2009 BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition will open in the Gallery of Visual Arts on March 10th and run until April 10th. The gallery will be closed for spring break March 30th-April 3rd. The opening reception will be held in the GVA from 5-7pm on Thursday, March 12th.

The Department of Art was honored to host visiting artist John Armstrong this month.  John worked with Professor James Bailey and students to demonstrate techniques and discuss printmaking processes.  Here are some pictures of John’s visit:

Exhibition Info:

Mary Ann Papanek-Miller, former Professor and Chair of The Department of Art at The University of Montana, and current Professor and Chair of the Department of Art Media and Design at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois will be exhibiting new works at The Missoula Art Museum.  The exhibition titled,  ” A Snowman cares for our Memory of Water” will run from March 6 to June 14.  Mary Ann Papanek-Miller will give a gallery talk on March 6 during the opening reception from 5-8pm.   The work in this exhibition utilizes line and a variety of mixed media processes with a strong vocabulary of painting.  A deep spiritual attitude is revealed in this work as Papanek- Miller studies the philosophical nature of time and the conflict of popular culture clashing with a concern for the earth.

Papanek-Miller incorporates the technique of isolating an object, often a mass produced toy or phenomena, creating a drawing or other visual record, and subsequently creating compositions by arranging and layering those images. Through this layering, new meanings and associations emerge. There a dialogue begins between the viewers and the different, sometimes disparate symbols layered and juxtaposed.

Arguably because of television and, increasingly the computer screen, the audience has been conditioned to accept the moving image as a way of consuming visual imagery. The layering in Papanek-Miller’s works lead the viewer and encourage him or her not to think of the activities in an isolated sense but as a process and as an interrelated experience. Her process urges us not to just look, but to slow down and go beyond, to contemplate a deeper experience of seeing, and, recognize the lessons we know and can draw from art.

Through layering and exploring symbol interrelationships, Papanek-Miller incorporates the familiar in a ritual of re-examination and re-contextualizing. She makes use of a limited palette and values, and graphic lines are bounced off muted colors. The foundation she works upon is a surface that has been weathered and nature itself has left what she calls an “environmental imprint.”

Papanek-Miller incorporates reflections from childhood stories, songs, and rhymes which reveal a deep concern for the environment. Her extensive toy collection is the basis for her environmental concerns. She states, “I continue to be attracted to toys as social barometers and cultural souvenirs. I believe that toys are beautiful and magical objects and that they bridge our many cultures and age groups as ‘contemporary amulets’ and ‘time devices’ serving as truthful conceptual tools.”

Archie Bray Day:

The University of Montana Dept of Art Jim and Jane Dew Visiting Artist fund and the Starving Sculpture and Ceramics Students are pleased to host its annual Archie Bray Day on Tuesday, Mar 3 from 10am to 6pm in the Ceramics lab in the Art Annex.  Each year, three of the current resident artists from the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena are invited to demonstrate their skills in ceramic art for students and the general public.  Approximately 10 residents work and study at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena and have been juried in from over 100 applicants from around the world.  This year the University of Montana will host Kevin Snipes, Renee Audette and Jeremy Hatch.  Demonstrations will take place from approximately 10am to 1pm, and 2-5pm.  Slide lectures of the artists work will be shown from 5-6pm.  Archie Bray Days are free and open to the public. About the Artists:

Kevin Snipes received his MFA from the University of Florida in 2003.  Creator of quirky vessels embellished with brightly colored cartoony figures, Snipes has been receiving accolades from galleries across the country.  Snipes has also been an artist in residence at the Cleveland Institute of the Arts and the Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts.

Jeremy Hatch is a ceramicist and sculptor who holds a BFA from Emily Carr Institute and an MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He has attended residencies and exhibited his work throughout Canada and the United States. Jeremy currently employs a ceramic process of slip-casting porcelain to produce large unglazed sculptural installations. He has expanded his material investigations to incorporate rubber, plastic and fiberglass into his ceramic work. Hatch was the recipient of British Columbia’s 2005 Visual Arts Development Awards.

Renee Audette discovered her love of figurative ceramics as an art student at the University of Wyoming where she received her BFA in 2000.  She completed her MFA, in 2005, at the University of Florida where she studied under Nan Smith, Linda Arbuckle and Matt Long.  After graduating, Renee lived and worked in Gainesville FL as a studio artist and part-time professor at Santa Fe Community College. Renee exhibits her work both nationally and internationally and was featured as an emerging talent in the May 2007 edition of Ceramics Monthly magazine.  Her sculptures explore the ironic stereotypes of girlhood innocence and naiveté by creating a voyeuristic dream-world based on memory and fantasy, where everything is not as perfect as it first appears.

Visiting Artist:

The Department of Art is thrilled to have John Armstrong on campus as a visiting artist.  John will be doing demos Monday, February 2nd through Wednesday, February 4th in the Printmaking Studio (FA 402), from approximately 10:00 a.m. till 3:00 each day. John will be demonstrating various printmaking techniques and approaches to the medium while working with faculty and student assistants to produce several unique prints. We encourage you to stop by throughout the week to view the works in progress.

Engaged Abstraction: John Armstrong Recent Works
February 6- May 23, 2009: These recent works by Master Printer John Armstrong highlight his strengths as an artist and printmaker. The 21 works that comprise the exhibition were selected from Armstrong’s recent body of works by MAM’s Curator Stephen Glueckert.

This extensive selection of prints features over forty-five works by different internationally acclaimed artists who have used the Armstrong-Prior Print workshop in Phoenix, Arizona, and have relied heavily on John Armstrong’s expertise in producing this work.

Current Exhibitions:

The Department of Art’s Gallery of Visual Arts continues to host the exhibition of Tracy Linder.  The exhibition will run until February 27.  Tracy gave a gallery talk on January 29th at the opening reception.

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture is currently exhibiting Spirit Trails and Sky Beings, featuring Ojibway stories scribed on  birch scrolls as told and made by  Ojibway traditionalist and UM graduate Richard LaFromboise (Miskomin) as well as Fritz Scholder: Lithographs, featuring 25 lithographs created by the renowned Tamarind Institute artist, tracing diverse subjects and poignant portrayals of the contemporary American Indian experience.

The University Center Gallery is hosting a retrospective exhibition called, “Studio 1969, A year in the middle of Movements“.  Stop by the UC to see works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Rudy Autio, Peter Voulkos and many others.  The opening reception will be on Thursday, Feb 5th from 5-7pm.  The exhibition runs until Feb 27th.

Coming up:

Amber Bushnell, a Media Arts Graduate Student will be presenting a digital installation piece beginning at 5pm Feb 4-8.  The exhibition will be projected on the front wall of McGill Hall.

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture will present The Rape of Europa in conjunction with Montana PBS.  This special showing of the riveting new documentary film about the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War is free will take place  Monday, February 9, 2009, 7pm in the University Center Theatre and is free and open to the public.

MAM will also feature the 4^th Artini: Auction ~ In Your Face, on February 19. Prior to the auction, the Carnegie Galleries will be emptied to allow twelve artists to create art during this exciting new event. The Artini Committee and MAM seized this opportunity and asked a small number of artists to spend the day creating an original piece of art to be auctioned that night.  The gallery will open as a studio beginning at 9 AM on February 19, giving each artist until 7 PM to complete an artwork that will go into a live auction. The event reception will begin at 5:30 PM, and guests will be allowed to explore the gallery and observe the artists at work. Participating artists include Brad Allen, Courtney Blazon, Elizabeth Dove, Dustin Hoon, Bob Phinney, Kerri Rosenstein, Stephanie Frostad, and Jonathan Marquis (artists known at the time of publication).

MAM’s Art Auction Exhibition culminates with the 37^th Benefit Art Auction on February 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn. The Department of Art’s Starving Sculpture and Ceramics Students (SSCS) will be holding their 22nd Annual Christmas Sale and juried Show December 4-6. The Sale will take place in the Ceramics Studio in the Art Annex next to the Adams Center on the UM Campus. The Sale will include Ceramics, Sculpture, and Glass pieces made by students and faculty.

The University of Montana and the University Center Gallery would like to inform the general public and artistic community at large of the upcoming exhibition by Oregon-based artist Ianclark. The show is titled New and Old Marks and will feature photographic, sculptural, and mixed media works. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, December 4, from 5-8pm.

Clark’s recent works explore themes of textural, cultural, and environmental decay.

The artist reveals a very close attention to detail, creating beautiful images that make strong use of color and (in his photographs) a very narrow depth of field.  Clark is visibly attracted to texture and abstraction, which he explores through a unique, minimalist aesthetic.

The Missoula Art Museum will host it exhibition, “ANTIQUE QUILTS: UNIQUE PATTERNS AND SHAPES” from December 5th to the 31st. This festive, antique quilt collection is a selection of 16 works from the Jim and Kate Carroll Collection. Viewers will enjoy a variety of hand-quilted traditional and symmetrical patterns featuring stylized flowers and figures, with a decidedly pastel palette. Many of these 19th and early 20th century quilts are baby quilts.

MAM recognizes and wishes to celebrate the influence of this historic craft and its connection to many contemporary expressions. This traveling exhibition is sponsored by Copper Village Art Center in Anaconda under the auspices of the Montana Art Gallery Directors’ Association (MAGDA).

This year the UM printmakers and community artists carved and printed over 50 different images for the Steamroller Print Project, creating some 240+ large scale prints. Some of the prints are currently on display at the University Center, and will also be featured in the Festival of the Dead Parade on Sunday, beginning at 6:00 pm. The Ceretana Gallery will host an opening reception for their newest exhibition “pink in montana” on Friday, November 7th from 5-8pm. VISITING ARTIST:

The Department of Art is honored to present ceramic and installation artist Sadashi Inuzuka for a day of demonstrations and discussion on Wednesday, November 5, 2008. Inuzuka’s demonstrations will take place in the Art Annex building, room 129 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with a break from 12:00 to 2:00 pm for lunch, followed at 6:15 pm by the lecture and presentation of his work in the Social Sciences Building, room 356. The public is invited, and there is no admission charge. This event is made possible by the Jim and Jane Dew Visiting Artist Fund.

Sadashi Inuzuka’s installations address the artist’s concerns about ecological imbalances, and the relationship between humans and the rest of nature. Each work is created with the intent to transform an ordinary, sterile space into a meditative haven. While many of the installations are large scale, upwards of 6,000 feet, they are inhabited by often hundreds of unique, detailed, totemic ceramic objects made by hand. These objects are based on his ideas of life forms, not on photographs of naturally occurring species. The making of so many of these forms is time-consuming, repetitive and laborious. This part of the process, described by the artist as “obsessive,” absorbs him in the “momentum of making.” By immersing himself in the work, Inuzuka blurs the distinction between self and whole. The Department of Art’s 14th Annual Student Juried Exhibition has opened with a successful and well attended reception in the Gallery of Visual Arts (Social Science Building). The exhibition was juried by Missoula artist Bev Glueckert, and includes over 70 works from art majors from the freshman to graduate level. The exhibition runs until Thursday, October 23rd. The Department of Art is pleased to host Visiting Artists Tara Wilson, a ceramicist, on October 13 for a 10.30am slide show and discussion of her work, and a 2.00pm demonstration of her techniques. Mrs. Wilson will conduct a ceramics workshop on Tuesday, October 14th from 10am-12pm. All activities will take place in the Ceramics Studio, Art Annex 128.

The 8th Annual Steamroller Print Project is also gearing up now, and will take place on Wednesday, October 29th in front of the University Theatre, from 9:00 am. till 4:00 pm. T-Shirts and cards will be available for purchase.

Professor Bailey has also organized an exhibition of Day of the Dead Steamroller Prints that will be shown at The University Center as part of the Day of Dialogue, on Oct. 30th.

The Missoula Art Museum invites you to join artist Steve Holloway as he discusses his current exhibit, Following The Sense of Water, and contemporary map-making. Holloway’s work, currently on exhibit in their Education Gallery, explores his theory of RIGHT Map-Making and employs pinhole photography, printmaking, and maps. Professor James Bailey was invited to be a panelist on woodcuts this month at the National Mid-America Print Conference hosted by The University of North Dakota. He was also invited to be apart of a national print portfolio which will also be exhibited at the Conference. In addition his work was acquired for the Montana State University School of Art Collection, in Bozeman, MT and the The University of North Dakota, PEARS Print Archive, Fargo, ND 2008.

Department of Art Annual Faculty Exhibition and Lecture:

The Department of Art welcomes you to its Annual Faculty Exhibition and Lecture. Professor H. Rafael Chacón will present a lecture on Montana Architect A.J. Gibson from 5-6pm in Social Science room 352 on Thursday, Sept 4th. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held from 6-7pm in the Gallery of Visual Arts (Social Science bldg). The exhibit runs until October 1st.

The UC Gallery is currently exhibiting, “Ceramic Montana” and will host an opening reception on Thursday, Sept 4th from 5-7pm. Works on display include those from such renowned Montana Ceramicists as Rudy Autio, Peter Voulkos, current Department of Art Professor Beth Lo, Graduate Student Eva Champagne, recent graduates Kelly Cox and Eric Mullis, as well as a host of other big names. The exhibit runs until Sept. 25th.

First Friday:

Graduate Students Eva Champagne and Rebecca Weed are presenting their newest works in an exhibition titled “Champagne and Weed” at the Alley Gallery (behind Sushi Hana) with an opening reception from 5-9pm. Be sure to check it out, but know that the title may be misleading even though the art is fantastic.

Adjunct Instructor Edgar Smith and Assistant Professor Brad Allen will be unveiling new works at The Ceretana Gallery on First Friday as well. The opening reception will be from 5-8pm.

Recent Art Department Graduate Keith Miller (BFA 2008) will host an opening reception at Noteworthy (101 S. Higgins) from 5.30 to 8.30pm. Be sure to check out Keith’s recent printworks.

For those of you traveling to the Butte area, be sure to check out the Venus Rising Gallery featuring works of Graduate Student Lisa Jarrett. Lisa’s exhibition is titled, “Fear” and runs until Oct 31st.

The Department of Art was honored to have a special visit to our building by internationally renowned artist Andrew Romanoff on Friday, April 18th. Andrew was in Missoula to speak about his Shrinky Dink art at the Museum and then took time to review the works of Mary Ann Bonjorni’s Drawing II class who also made Shrinky Dink images thanks to the generous donation of materials from the awesome folks who run the company. Professor James Bailey was a visiting artist for five days this month at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. While on campus he presented six lectures including: “History of Monotypes: Past to Present”, “The History of Artist Books“, “Steamroller Printmaking”, “Books in the Digital Age” and a public lecture on his own work. In addition, Professor Bailey presented two demonstrations on monotyping, and worked with the graduate seminar class. And he did some gator wrestling:

Dr. Suzanne Gott, Assistant Professor of Art History at the Department of Visual and Aboriginal Arts of Brandon University, Manitoba will present a lecture titled, “Of Hummers, Lufthansa, and Osama bin Laden: Display, Performance, and Global Culture at Asante Funerals” on Tuesday, April 29 at 7 PM in Fine Arts 302. Dr. Gott’s research focuses on women’s art and visual culture in southern Ghana. She holds Art History and Folklore doctoral degrees in African art from Indiana University, Bloomington. She has written on maternal imagery in Asante court and funerary regalia, on women’s dress and the fashionable display of female wealth, and on strategies of display and performance in Asante women’s funerary presentations. She is co-editor of a forthcoming book on contemporary African fashion, guest curator of The Newark Museum exhibition Glass Beads of Ghana, and consulting African art curator for The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Blue Mountain Clinic and Students for Choice are looking for art submissions for their upcoming Bra and Condom fashion show titled, “Off the Rack: A Daring and Baring Fashion Show” to be held May 2nd at the Wilma theater. ART DEPARTMENT FACULTY AS ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS:

As if hosting a visiting artist, orgainizing a lecture and staying up for 35 hours to assist students in creating prints weren’t enough, Professor Jim Bailey was one of six artists from around to country invited to exhibit in “Book Marks 2008″ at the Birke Art Gallery, Marshall University in Huntington, WV.

In addition, his work was included in the exhibition “Face to Face” at the Jundt Art Museum in Spokane, WA along side such artists as Ivan Albright, Jose Posada, Rembrandt and Diego Rivera.

Professor Bailey will also be a visiting artist in April at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA.

MORE ART:

Freshman Art Major SHANE BELL invites everyone to an art exhibition and silent auction on Saturday, March 15 at Bear’s Brew Coffee House on Helen Ave (which, as evidenced by these pics I found online, is clearly a lively place) beginning at 6pm. Shane and his fellow artists are trying to raise money to build an orphanage in Zambia, Africa. Stop by and check out this event and see some art, eat some food and contribute to this worthy cause. There is no admission fee to the event.

Visiting Adjunct Instructor Koi Neng Liew is offering a Figurative Ceramics Workshop on Thursday, March 13 in the Ceramics Studio (Art Annex) with a demonstration from 10am -1pm and slides to begin at 2pm. This event is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Rudy and Lela Autio Opportunity Fund in Ceramics.

Renowned Printmaker Tom Huck will be visiting campus on March 18th and giving a lecture at 4.15pm in Social Sciences 356. This event is also free and open to the public, sponsored by the Jim and Jane Dew Visiting Artist Lecture Series.

Also, The University of Montana’s Sustainable Campus Committee is currently organizing events for Earth Week. The Department of Art is proud to exhibit the wonderful works of our Senior Thesis BFA students in two galleries on campus. The UC Gallery will display works from March 3-28, and the Gallery of Visual Arts will have pieces up from March 6-April 2. Both exhibits will host opening receptions on March 6. The UC Gallery reception will be from 4-6pm, with the GVA reception beginning at 5 and ending at 7pm. Click on the orange square to view the students’ own website designed for the exhibition.

The Department of Art’s Gallery of Visual Arts (in the Social Science Building) is currently exhibiting the works of Michael Barnes and Tom Huck. Michael paid a visit to campus and spoke about his work on Feb. 12th, and Tom Huck will deliver a lecture in March.

The University Center Gallery is exhibiting the works of recent Department of Art graduate Travis Smith until February 29th. Titled, “Messes, Makers, Meaning and History,” Travis’ work ,”presents pictorial translations of colonization. He uses a crude, unrefined painted surfaces to compose subtle and at times, bitter narratives of events that deal with the colonization of Native Americans.” Be sure to check it out.

The Montana Museum of Art and Culture is currently exhibiting the works of “52 works by contemporary Native American artists addressing the conflict between Native people’s relationship to the earth and the political and economic forces that undermine it. This traveling exhibition was organized by Honor the Earth, a national Native American organization founded by Winona LaDuke.” Click HERE to visit their page and get more details.

Art Student Matt Fennell is conducting an art contest and looking for submissions. Matt described the project as, “[The} Student Political Action Committee on ASUM has decided to enact a war on apathy, themed “Get out the Vote” drive for the 08 Presidential election…and needs badass flyers. So we’re running a contest to see if students will respond. We want 3 different war themed designs, with the slogan “war on apathy” for fliers. We will also eventually make flags for a publicity stunt if students are interested in that. The Department of Media Arts is looking for an artist to help design and produce a small back drop, sculpture and set for a stop motion animation piece. You can contact Paul Alvarez by clicking on his name and sending an e-mail, or you can give him a call at 406.544.3068.

ART DEPARTMENT FACULTY AS ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS:

The Department of Art’s faculty members have been very active in the creation, exhibition and research/publication of art and related issues lately; here is a summary of their recent achievements:

Associate Professor Elizabeth Dove had a Solo Exhibition at the Missoula Art Museum from November 2, 2007 to January 5, 2008 titled “birthweight.” Elizabeth was the Juror for National Exhibition “Americas 2008 Paperworks“. The jurying was in November 2007 for the show in January 2008 at Northwest Art Center, Minot, North Dakota.

Professor Elizabeth Lo’s work “Tea and Rice” was featured on a full page ad in Ceramics Monthly’s October issue for “Form and Imagination, Women Ceramic Sculptors,” at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA. Professor Lo also had works on exhibit in a curated group invitational at the Turman Larison Contemporary Gallery in Helena, MT called “Northwest Figurative Ceramics Invitational”. ichard Notkin curated the exhibition.

Professor James Bailey is currently part of an exhibition titled, “Book Marks 2008″ at the Birke Art Gallery at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. The exhibit runs until March.

Assistant Professor Brad Allen recently conducted an iron pour, allowing students and open to faculty, to take part in the process of creating artworks from liquid iron using molds they created for a 45-student collaborative exhibition in the Off-Center Gallery. Assistant Professor Allen recently accepted an invitation to serve as a founding committee member of the Western Cast Iron Art Alliance and the WCIAA Conference in Denver at the University of Colorado, congratulations, Brad!

Professor Rafael Chacón gave a lecture titled “A.J. Gibson Stories” for Leadership Missoula, reviewed portfolios in progress for the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, co-taught a new course titled “Egyptian Art and Culture” with Margaret Kingsland as part of Continuing Education’s MOLLI program, and lectured on the exhibition “Crash, Pause, Rewind” at the Missoula Art Museum. Rafael was Interviewed in Kelly Black and Russell Daniels’, “Missoula’s Festival of the Dead,” for New West Missoula. His guest column titled “Blending the past, present: Building additions walk a fine line between preservation, new ideas” was published in The Missoulian.

Professor and Department Chair M.A. Papanek-Miller had two works in “Trans” at Atlantic Works Gallery (a national juried exhibition), East Boston, MA, through January 12, 2008. The Juror was L. Bradbury, Independent Curator and Gallery Director and Curator Montserrat College of Art, Beverly M.A. Mary Ann also has works in the Todd Gallery at Middle Tennessee State University until Feb 22nd.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Nathan Sullivan has works currently on display in a solo exhibition at Southern Oregon University’s Stevenson Union Gallery titled, “Form Series.” Check out Nathan’s work on his website by clicking HERE.

Recent Department of Art graduate Brett Svetlik invites everyone to visit his new website and take a look at what he’s been up to since graduating with a BFA in Spring of 2007. Brett’s site will be available in the “Blogroll” section of this page for future reference.
