The Dram Shop:

School of Art graduate student Brock Mickelsen and his collaborator Tyler Hoecker have teamed up to present “A Mixed-Severity Landscape: Fire in the Bitterroot Ecosystem” a collaborative investigation into the role of mixed-severity fires in our local ecosystem. This effort, supported by the UM Interdisciplinary Collaborative Network, allowed them to combine their expertise in fire ecology and photography to bring a fresh perspective to fire-affected landscapes in the Bitterroot Mountains. The resulting body of work consists of Mickelsen’s images depicting recently burned areas in the Bitterroot alongside Hoecker’s science-based commentary about the role of mixed-severity fires in local forests. They invite us to their First Friday conversation about fire in our local ecosystems.

Radius Gallery:

The good folks over at Radius will be spending much of this First Friday outside! From their website:
“In addition to our fabulous on-going exhibit, outside of Radius we’re mounting a sidewalk sculpture garden full of outdoor art that nestles well in gardens, walkways, and greets visitors at your door.

Artists featured are ceramicist Crista Ann Ames (who will be in attendance) and the metal works of John Cook. These works will be on exhibit on Friday and for sale on Saturday from 10 – 3. Come down and see inventive ways to augment your garden.

Inside Radius “Sonnets: Julia Galloway & Stephanie Frostad” is in its final weeks. This is your last change to enjoy evening hours to see the works of these exceptionally talented Missoula-based potter and painter.”

Missoula Art Museum:

Our friends over at MAM invite you to view the works of Chris Pappan. The Chicago-based artist uses 19th century photographs and ledgers to make contemporary portraits inspired by underground comix, punk, and skateboard culture. Pappan will describe how he mirrors his subjects, distorts features or proportions, facets portraits, and reverses values to re-imagine what otherwise would be a straight-forward rendering in a gallery talk at 7 PM.
