The Weather Channel is predicting a warm and sunny First Friday for us on May 5th! Let’s take a look at what art events are in store:
Advanced Painting Class:
Art students from Professor Kevin Bell‘s advanced class will be showing their works in the studio space adjacent to Dana Gallery for one night, this First Friday. They didn’t send images of any art, but they did issue this group portrait. Stop by and say hello between 5 and 8pm!
Professor MaryAnn Bonjorni and Ed Morrissey will host another round of Icon-O-Clash this First Friday from 7-9pm. Join them above the Union Club bar as they facilitate the upgrading of old thrift store paintings into customized works of art before your very eyes! The proceeds of each sale go to support unique School of Art endeavors like these.
Following Icon-O-Clash, art students from Professor Bonjorni’s performance art course will be staging their final performances of the semester in the same space, above the Union Club Bar and Grill this First Friday.
School of Art graduate students responsible for the alternative exhibition space in the alley behind the Old Post bar invite us to view a video installation by Marshall Granger entitled “A Couple Goes Out to Eat”. They have offered no explanation or additional information. Mysterious grad students….
Our friends over at MAM are hosting a large exhibition this First Friday. Join the art community as we honor the Autio legacy with The Lela and Rudy Autio Family Collection.
The Autio Family Collection is one shaped by more than six decades of friendships and professional artistic relationships. Meet some of the artists represented in the collection who knew Lela and Rudy Autio well. Senior Curator Brandon Reintjes will offer a brief welcome and overview of the exhibition at 7 PM.
Connect to the art, artists, and a community of art supporters at Missoula Art Museum on the First Friday of each month from 5 to 8 PM. Enjoy a reception with the artists and live music by KBGA, a no-host bar, and gallery talk at 7 PM. First Friday events are generously sponsored by the Missoulian.
The Radius Gallery is hosting an evening with Barb Schwarz Karst! For nearly a year Barb has been working on a series of ambitious paintings and we’re excited to unveil three of them on FIRST Friday. Join us at 5pm for a talk with the artist about these new works and the series that will follow.
These paintings gather strength from her early career techniques as a photo-real painter with her interest in contemporary grid paintings (think Chuck Close), bringing the intensity and energetic intrigue of those styles to the subject matter of the West.
Yet as a former school teacher and life-long Montanan, Barb is also sensitive to how the West has been romanticized pictorially. The tension in these pieces comes through her ability to capture some of the essence of those conflicts in her composition, color choices and techniques.
These are MUST SEE paintings by a local favorite that will only be showing until May 20th.
There will be a short talk with a Q & A at 5. Then Barb will be hanging out at Radius all night to chat with visitors.
The Clay Studio of Missoula is proud to present a solo exhibition featuring the ceramic works of Missoula artist Doug Baldwin. Doug has been a Studio Artist at the Clay Studio for over a decade. He received his BA (1961) and MA (1965) from the University of Montana. He also studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. From 1969 to 2004 he taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. His work has been exhibited internationally.
In addition to Doug’s sculptural creations, the exhibit will include his series of short films, which will be on view during his opening reception and available for purchase.
Doug & His Ducks: Works by Doug Baldwin will be on display at the Clay Studio of Missoula from May 5-26, 2017, with an opening on Friday, May 5, from 5:30-9pm.
