The academic year may have ended, but this First Friday will be as busy as ever. Join your fellow students, recent grads, and members of Missoula’s vibrant art community as we explore works from these talented individuals.
Our recently graduated MFA students have come together for one last group exhibition in Missoula! Head over to 127 E Main St. Suite 316 to see the works of Dean Foster, Ron Geibel, Brett Hargeshiemer, Burke Jam, Suzanne Lussier, and Jack Metcalf.
FrontierSpace:
Located in the ally behind the Old Post Pub, FrontierSpace is Missoula’s most alternative gallery space. Stop by this First Friday for, “Conversance: A Sculptural Ceramics Exhibition.” This exhibition brings together the work of 15 artists from across the nation, exploring the different ways to utilize the ceramic medium in contemporary art practice. The exhibition’s opening reception will take place Friday, June 7th from 6-9 p.m.
Having just received her BFA in Painting, School of Art alumnae Sarah Eisenlor will present her latest works in a First Friday exhibition at the Swift Building. Sarah describes her works as, “collages made with magazines and glue.” Stop by the very cool Swift building and congratulate Sarah on her recent graduation and the acquisition of her work by the Montana Museum of Art & Culture! The Swift Building is located at 315 S. 4th Street E, near the Missoulian newspaper building:
Montana Natural History Center:
Adding to the list of recent grads, School of Art alumnae Emily Grasie will be showing her latest pieces at the Montana Natural History Center. Emily has been working at the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum on campus, and that experience has informed her latest artworks. Emily’s exhibition, “Still Lifes, Still Lives’ will run through July. The Montana Natural History Center is located at 120 Hickory St. UPDATE: Be sure to congratulate Emily on her new position at Chicago’s Field Museum!
Le Petit Outre and The Brunswick:
Local artist Patricia Thornton has gathered together a font of talent for this exhibition! “Small Works” is a group exhibition of 25 artists in two locations. Join Patricia and her guest artists Bobby Tilton, Bradley Allen, Bev Beck Glueckert, Courtney Blazon, Debby Florence, Elizabeth Stone, Kathleen Herlihy-Paoli, Jennifer Leutzinger, Janet Whaley, Karen Shimoda, Karen Slobod, Leslie Van Stavern Millar, Lady Pajama, Adelaide Every, Jonathan Marquis, Pamela Caughey, Renee Taffe, Toni Matlock, Ursula Carpenter, Shalene Valenzuela, Cathryn Mallory, Lisa Jarrett, Steven Krutek, Jenny Parker, Jennifer Erickson, and Tim Thornton. Work will be shown at the Brunswick from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm, and at Le Petit Outre from 6 pm to 8 pm.
The Brink Gallery is pleased to announce the First Friday exhibition, “Open Pollination” by Kuzana Ogg. Join us for an opening reception from 5-8pm at 111 W. Front St.
Our friends over at the clay studio have a wonderful First Friday evening in store for all of us! This month they are showing off their Anagama kiln, which was built in 2005 under the direction of former artist-in-residence and School of Art alum Ryan Mitchell. The kiln is approximately 620 cubic feet, and usually fires for 6 days. They will be firing the kiln between May 25 and June 2 under the direction of current woodfire artist in residence Perry Haas as part of their Invitational Wood Fire.
In addition, the Clay Studio gallery is presenting a selection work by invitational artists. The opening reception for this exhibit takes place First Friday June 7, 5:30-9pm, and will feature nearly 40 pieces by this exciting array of artists. More information can be found on their website HERE.
Bozeman artist Jay Schmidt will host an opening reception of his work this First Friday, complete with a gallery talk beginning at 7pm. The folks at the MAM warn that some of Mr. Schmidt’s images may be disturbing.
Missoula Community Access Television, or MCAT as the kids call it, will hold its Movie Club meeting at the Wilma this First Friday so they may offer a free screening of, “Terror Vortex.” The horror film by Christian Ackerman will run for 70 minutes beginning at 7pm and will be followed by a post-show discussion with Christian and his crew. The trailer for “Terror Vortex” is rated for all audiences, but might be a bit scary:
